Having to spend a lot of time at home these days, means that quality moments with our loved ones are more than ever, a comfort as well as a blessing!
As a someone who blogs about parties and entertaining, I find that at times like these, it's even more important to find beauty, creativity and make even the smallest occasion, a special one to celebrate.
So I thought I'd share some easy ideas to help you style a girls' movie night in!
Little Women Movie Night Ideas with DIYs, Recipes and FREE Printables
My daughter and I have always loved our movie night sessions on weekends. And for our special mother-daughter movie night, we screened the new Greta Gerwig's Little Women movie, which is out now on Blu-ray™ , DVD, and Digital.
The movie touches on topics of sisterhood, connection, female empowerment, creativity and independence, which I believe are traits we all need to celebrate, especially nowadays!
For this post, I wanted to give you some simple ideas for a family of four. But of course, feel free to scale it up or down, depending on how many family members you're having at your movie night in.
This theme would also be a perfect Mother's Day or birthday celebration too!
Little Women Movie Night Ideas - DIY Decor and FREE Printables
The colors chosen for the decor of my movie night were pink, orange, yellow and green - pastel colors that evoke "spring" to me.
For any of my parties, I love shopping my home for decor. And at times like these, the fun and challenge is to use what you have handy and bring it together in a creative way to dress a pretty table or party space!
So for my table runner, I used colored wrapping paper and designed some pretty pastel printables to help me decorate my space.
You can download the same Little Women printables by clicking this link.
Used for the remaining decor, a combination of pink, orange and yellow faux flowers, books wrapped in the pastel colored wrapping paper as a cake stand, and old photo frames also painted in pastel colors.
I used these photo frames to display some of my wall art printables, which is such an easy DIY and helps to add pops of color to any space!
Little Women DIY Embroidery Hoop Wall Art
Inspired by the era of the movie, I also created a pretty embroidery-hoop wall art containing movie quotes to decorate the backdrop for my movie snacks/concessions table.
I'm loving how this DIY project turned out, and thinking that the hoops would also look so pretty as home decor for spring!
To make this project you'll need:
* Embroidery hoops - you can find these online
* Little Women movie quotes printable signs
* Hot glue
* Scissors
* Paper flowers or faux flowers and greenery - free flower templates here.
Directions:
1) Print your wall art signs onto white A4 or A3 size paper (depending on how big your hoops are)
2) Insert the paper into the embroidery hoops and tighten the metal clasp.
3) Trim off excess paper at the back of the hoops.
4) Hot glue paper flowers or faux foliage to the tops of the hoops.
You could also print the signs and simply add them to photo frames to decorate your home.
Little Women DIY T-Shirts
To help add a little fun and cheer to our special movie night, I created matching t-shirts for us to wear. These DIY t-shirts are super easy to make, and are a fun party favor or keepsake!
To make your Little Women t-shirts you'll need:
* Printable t-shirt graphics - download yours here
* Fabric transfer paper for light-colored fabrics
* White t-shirts
* Scissors
* An iron
* Freezer paper or parchment paper
Directions:
1) Print the t-shirt graphics onto the transfer paper following the manufacturer's instructions on the package, and trim off excess paper as close to the graphics as possible.
2) Place the transfer paper onto the front or back of your t-shirt with the graphics facing down, and place the freezer paper on top.
3) Iron on top according to the transfer paper manufacturer's instructions.
4) Peel off the transfer paper to reveal your design.
Little Women Movie Night Ideas - Snacks and Concessions
For our movie night concessions or snacks table, I wanted to serve something easy to prepare but a little more substantial than just popcorn and candy.
My inspiration from the movie’s era was to create a couple of grazing boards with food items and snacks that appear in the Little Women movie or the book, like French bonbons (macarons), cold meats, cheese, fruits, nuts, gingerbread, pink lemonade etc.
I created buffet cards for some of these food items, and incorporated each main character's name (Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy) in the titles for a touch of whimsy.
Round toppers, straw flags and buffet signs are also included in the printable set I designed, and can be used to decorate the snacks table.
You can download and print these table decorations for free here.
Beth's Homemade Pink Lemonade Recipe
To accompany our movie night snacks, we served homemade pink lemonade, one of Beth's favorites!
Ingredients: Serves 4
300 g (10 oz) caster sugar
1 1/2 lemons, sliced
170 g (6 oz) fresh or frozen raspberries
Garnishes (optional): ice, mint and extra lemon slices to serve
Directions:
1) Add all the ingredients (except garnishes) to a saucepan and pour over 350 ml (12 fl. oz) cold water.
2) Bring to a boil stirring often. When sugar is dissolved, take it off the heat and leave to cool.
3) Strain the mixture through a sieve to extract all the juices, then store this syrup in an air-tight container, refrigerated until ready to use.
4) Just before serving, pour the syrup into a jug, pitcher or decanter and top with 1 L (33 fl. oz) sparkling or still cold water, and add garnishes.
Little Women Movie Night Bingo Game
To make our movie night even more fun and interactive, we decided to play a movie night Bingo game!
To play, each guest gets a Bingo card. I created four printable, randomized Bingo cards in total with actions or scenery that appear in the movie: someone cries, characters hug each other, scenes of nature etc.
You then mark off each Bingo square as and when they appear in the movie. The first person to complete a row of squares (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) shouts "BINGO" and wins!
To create your movie night Bingo game, simply print the Bingo cards onto white cardstock, hand out pens or markers for guests to use, and have fun!
I hope you guys enjoyed the ideas, and feel inspired to re-create some of them at home! And don’t forget, Greta Gerwig's Little Women is out now on Blu-ray™ , DVD, and Digital so it’s perfect for a movie night in!
