Throwback from the 80’s! All you need is French Onion Soup mix, sour cream and mayonnaise to make this utterly addictive French Onion Dip that is way better than store bought dip. This is the ONLY recipe I make using a store bought packet mix – a testament to how good it is!

I really don’t think I’m a food snob – hey, I’m that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. ButI was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesn’t taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.

This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.

It’s made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I don’t care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!

Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, it’s really soft – French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thickunless left out to soften. And it tastesless artificial than store bought dip. I think the sour cream goes a long way to add an element of freshness to this dip.

This is a quick, short post because it’s an extra recipe for today, a reader request! So I’m signing off. Hope you enjoy!Nagi xx

    Hi Nagi,
I enjoy and use many of your recipes. I hope you won’t mind one suggestion/correction: Lipton soup mix was introduced in 1952. Instead of “throwback to the 80’s,”“Throwback to the ‘50’s” is more accurate.

I’ve been making plain ol’ soup mix & sour cream dip for years; but this is MUCH better! The addition of mayo makes it creamier & the flavors are better balanced. GREAT!!

    Delicious!
So simple and easy to make; the Mayo was a nice touch on the classic soup mix/sour cream hack for a more creamy texture, yum!
Halved the qty it to keep fresh longer and make a more “standard” dip size and kept the other soup pack half for another batch later!

Hi Nagi, thank you for your wonderful inspirational cooking activities. Re the french onion soup dip, there used to be one with cheese and chives which was also great, however continental discontinued the packet soup mix cheese and chives . They have refused to reinstate it in the past. Can you re create this one please. Kind Regards Karen

I would like to ask Nagi if she can make the Cheese and Chive dip that used to be possible with a packet of Cheese and chive soup. I really miss the taste of a Cheese and Chive dip.

Can you make this then put into the cob loaf. If so do you then bake the cob loaf in the oven or is it better to just put in cold??

    Hi Nagi
I wanted to make this but there wasn’t any onion soup mix, of any sort, on sale in my supermarket in the UK, so I used a Coleman’s onion sauce sachet instead………….Brilliant & just as good as I remembered from the 50’s !!!!!!!!

Dip made with onion soup mix and a tin of reduced cream is considered a Kiwi Classic. This is better… *(hides)*

I had to fudge the amounts a bit, because Maggi French Onion Soup sachets are only 29g but the sour cream came in a 2x150g twin pack so I winged it with about 1/3 cup of mayo and it TASTES DELICIOUS. Creamy, savoury, tart and perfect with salted kettle chips.

And I’m making your baked mac and cheese for dinner later so it is Nagi Night at our house!

    Blessed Nagi Grace

Thank you for all the food

Hmmm, actually, I’d say this is one of the lighter dips around! Most dips are made with cream cheese which is much heavier than sour cream! 🙂 N xx

    Hi Nagi,
The 80’s?? I was making this way back in the early 70’s (really dating myself!) and I’m sure I didn’t discover it first. However, we left out the mayo (too fattening) and sometimes for a change, we would add a tin of tiny shrimp. Delicious!

    Love all your recipes!

It goes back even further, actually. I had this as a kid in California as far back as the late 50s! No mayo though– we just mixed the soup packet with sour cream and dug in. With a bag of salty potato chips, absolutely addictive.

My mum also used to make this dip for any gathering, except instead of mayo she used greek yoghurt which made it a little less “heavy”. This and spinach cobb loaf will always have a special place in my heart (tummy).
